The World Around Us @DPS
In Dundonald studying The World Around Us aims to enable children to explore, ask questions and learn about the world in which they live. This occurs in a topic-based approach focusing on the development of knowledge, skills and understanding in the inter-connected subjects of Geography, History and Science and Technology.
We promote STEM throughout the school where the children see the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths both in practical investigations and technology tasks. Visits and projects involving outside agencies are arranged on a yearly basis. Organisations have included Sentinus, W5 and Food Scientists, Chemists and Physicists from Queens University, Belfast. The children create research projects with the scientists and then present their findings in QUB representing our school. They have come to love the opportunity and indeed challenge of standing at the front of a packed lecture theatre presenting their findings no mean feat for 9/10/11 year olds/ The UU hold a Big Science Fair and again our pupils do us proud in presenting their findings to those currently working in the area of STEM. P7 look forward to the visits from second year medic students involved in the Queen's Medics in Primary Schools programme which helps future doctors in their communication with primary aged children . It has been wonderful to welcome back some past pupils who chose medicine as their career.
